Evening Events

The XML Summer School includes a social event each evening so that delegates (and faculty!) have time to relax and experience some of the delights Oxford has to offer.

The social events provide the ideal platform for networking with your fellow delegates or extracting information from the faculty on a one-to-one basis. Many past delegates will tell you that the networking and learning experiences outside the lecture room are extremely valuable as they complement the teaching inside.

This year the events may be modified to comply with UK regulations and to make sure everyone is kept as safe as possible. But we will try to keep as closely as possible to our usual programme, which is set out here.

  • Sunday: A welcome reception in the historic Old Dining hall in the Front Quad at St Edmund Hall, starting at 7pm.
  • Monday: Punting down the River Cherwell, followed by dinner at the college. Bring warm, waterproof clothing in case the weather is cool or it rains. Meet at the Porter’s Lodge at 5:45pm, we’ll walk to the punting (6pm – 7pm). Dinner will be slightly later than usual, at 7:30pm.
  • Tuesday: College dinner at 7pm followed by a tour of some historic sites and a number of Oxford’s historic public houses (a.k.a. a pub crawl).
  • Wednesday: Dinner at the college followed by a games evening.
  • Thursday: Dress up for a short concert of traditional Oxford choral music in the chapel, followed by group photo at 6:45pm in the Front Quad and a formal candlelit dinner in the college.
