Travel 2009

Due to parking limitations in Oxford, we strongly advise delegates to arrive by train or other public transport if at all possible.

St Edmund Hall is very centrally located ( map ) on Queen’s Lane, just off the High Street. The college is within walking distance of the railway station, central bus station and the main shopping areas. Buses stop on High St near Queen’s Lane, including local buses (number 5 from the railway station) and buses to/from London and Heathrow.

On arrival at St Edmund Hall, please report to the Lodge, where you will be directed to the XML Summer School registration office and your accommodation.

By Air

The most convenient arrival airports are London Heathrow and Birmingham. There is a frequent express coach service to Oxford from Heathrow and a direct train service from Birmingham International. London Gatwick is a little further, but again there is direct coach service to and from Oxford.

By Train

There are frequent direct trains from London Paddington to Oxford and regular links to other mainline stations across the country, including direct trains from Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle and Edinburgh. The station in Oxford is a 15 minute walk from the city centre and St Edmund Hall. There is also a taxi rank at the station. For timetable information, please see the www.nationalrail.co.uk website.

By Bus

There are very frequent coach services from London’s Victoria Station, Heathrow and Gatwick Airports to Oxford. A rather less frequent service connects with Birmingham International airports. The central bus and coach depot (Gloucester Green) is in the city centre. For coach information, please see The Oxford Bus Company website.

By Car

The college has NO PARKING facilities for visitors and parking is very difficult within the city centre. There are only a few Pay & Display spaces available nearby on Longwall Street and overnight parking is not advised. You are therefore strongly recommended to make use of the city’s Park & Ride facilities.

Oxfordshire County Council manages 2 of the 5 Park & Ride Sites around the city. These are at Water Eaton (to the north east of Oxford, off the A4260) and Thornhill (to the east of Oxford, off the A40). The charge is 60p per day (24 hrs) with a maximum stay allowed of up to 72 hours. For longer stays, secure overnight parking can be arranged at Gloucester Green Underground Car Park (100 spaces). In order to take advantage of this facility, please contact the Enforcement Office during office hours on 01865 794307. Out of hours, please seek the assistance of the Car Park Officer on duty at Gloucester Green Car Park.

There is some parking on St Clements near the Magdalen Bridge, within walking distance of the College. The cost in September 2009 was GBP 17 per day. Oxford City Council keeps a list of local parking options at http://www.oxfordcityguide.com/GetHere.html with a map of locations and list of prices.
